‘Seabirds and Cetaceans’ Pelagic Adventures from the Isle of Mull

Two exploratory and ground-breaking pelagic excursions will take place this Summer from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

Extended trips (up to 10 hours duration) are planned to access and search deeper water to the south and west of Coll and Tiree, at times that may be conducive to the movements of rare petrels and shearwaters (Wilson’s petrel, Cory’s and Great shearwater), as well as larger cetaceans.

Recent years have seen a return to Hebridean seas of larger cetaceans, like Fin whale and Humpback whale, animals that have rarely been seen in these waters during the previous 30 years.

The area is a renowned hotspot for Minke whale and Common dolphin activity during the Summer months, as well as holding important populations of seabirds, including Manx shearwater and Storm petrel.

These trips offer a thrill-seeking adventure for birdwatchers and whale enthusiasts alike, and will appeal to any wildlife-watchers keen to share in the excitement being generated.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to participate in these trips, as a day passenger on-foot, using the public transport system in operation on the island. It is advised that individuals travelling from the mainland do so by car sharing, where possible. By private transport, the 07.25 hrs ferry departing Oban and returning from Craignure at 21.15 hrs allow participation in either (or both) of the planned trips as day passengers.

Due to the vagaries of our Scottish Summer weather, these trips are highly weather dependent and liable to cancellation at short notice. The likelihood is that a decision on whether a trip goes ahead will be made several days prior to the intended departure. Any cancellation will be displayed on all the relevant social media platforms used to promote these events.

Both trips depart from the Harbour pontoons, Ledaig car park, Tobermory

Cost £80 per person (per trip)

Each trip limited to 40 pax (plus staff), so to avoid disappointment, early booking is advised.
